The Challenge: Fire Strikes Just Before Thanksgiving
In November 2020, a fire broke out at Wappoo Wood Products’ facility in Sydney, Ohio. The blaze, which started near the sawdust pile, destroyed an entire building housing critical equipment, including their Cresswood Destroyer grinder. This equipment is essential for processing wood waste, a vital step in the company’s operations as a supplier of lumber for pallet manufacturers. With the fire taking out both the grinder and a package saw, Wappoo Wood was left without a way to process their wood waste, and the timing couldn’t have been worse—with the pandemic causing delays and shortages across the supply chain.
Matthew Baker, co-owner and vice president of Wappoo Wood Products, turned to Cresswood for a solution. Despite the industry-wide shortages and long lead times, we were able to quickly provide a new grinder and get their operations back on track.
Cresswood’s Swift Response: A Custom Solution for a Unique Situation
When Matthew Baker reached out to us, we were fully committed to finding a solution. While the search for a used grinder came up short due to the shortage of available equipment, we didn’t stop there. Our team worked closely with Wappoo Wood to supply them with a new Cresswood HF60 Destroyer grinder, connected to a blower system that efficiently moved the ground material into a storage area.
Additionally, we developed a customized solution for the unusual layout of the new building Wappoo Wood had acquired. The layout presented challenges, but we worked with the company to optimize the space. One bay now houses the grinder, while a nearby bay is used to store the ground material. We also provided the necessary conveyor and blower system to move the material to the storage area, ensuring minimal downtime and maximizing operational efficiency.
