Introducing Derrick Wells: Our New Operations Coordinator at Our World Class Industrial Grinder Company
Embarking on my journey in metal fabrication from a young age, my roots trace back to the days when I witnessed my grandfather’s adept craftsmanship in building and fabricating racing motorcycles. As I matured, I eagerly transitioned into actively participating in the creation of these motorcycles, gradually taking on additional responsibilities such as machining, tool, and die work.
Beyond the confines of the workshop, my formative years included invaluable experiences on our family farm, where I assisted my father in the repair and maintenance of various equipment. This hands-on upbringing laid the foundation for my later pursuits in metal and shop classes at Sycamore High School and vocational school, culminating in earning my associate’s degree in applied science with a specialization in diesel mechanics and engine overhaul at Kishwaukee College.
My journey at Kishwaukee also led me through welding classes, where my skills in metal fabrication flourished. The initial steps of my professional career unfolded at a local John Deere dealership, where I honed my skills in basic mechanics and fabrication under the guidance of seasoned mentors.
Taking a detour from the mechanical world, I proudly served in the United States Marine Corps as a billeted 0317 Scout Sniper. Upon completion of my military service, I redirected my focus back to welding and metal fabrication, immersing myself in the construction and fabrication of industrial pump equipment, and handling intricate and high-end systems.
Over the past decade, I have become an X-ray certified 6-G GTAW (Tig welder) specializing in pipe fitting and welding. Additionally, I hold certification as a GMAW (Mig welder). Throughout these years dedicated to working with industrial equipment, I actively sought out and acquired management skills, enabling me to mentor and contribute to the growth of others in the field.
Beyond the professional realm, metal fabrication has evolved from a career into a profound passion. Whether crafting personal projects in my workshop, working on my flat track racing motorcycle, or contributing my welding expertise to local friends and family, my dedication to the craft remains unwavering. Notably, I extend my skills to support OSCARMIKE, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping injured veterans stay on the move, repairing wheelchairs, and volunteering my time, which strongly aligns with Cresswood’s core values.
In the rare moments of free time between fabrication, teaching, and volunteering, I find solace in pursuing my interests as a professional skydiver, body flight enthusiast, and canopy pilot. My home drop zone, the Chicagoland Skydiving Center in Rochelle, Illinois, serves as the backdrop for thrilling experiences that complement my life’s diverse tapestry.
Family remains at the core of my existence, and I prioritize spending time with my girlfriend and her two daughters. Supporting their interests in gymnastics, cycling, and imaginative play, I strive to be a positive role model, exemplifying that passion and hard work can manifest anything in life. My journey in metal fabrication and welding has not only shaped my professional identity but has also become a testament to the belief that dedication can elevate one’s craft to world-class standards.
